The Supreme Military Council (YAŞ) convened today at Çankaya Palace chaired by Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım. Apart from the generals and admirals, the promotion and retirement of 53 generals and admirals who had held the rank for 3 years and more and a large number of colonels will be determined. While the YAŞ preparations were almost completed, the determination of staff to be promoted was carried out with extreme care.
‘Three commanders changed’
The Supreme Military Council which lasted 4 hours has ended. A statement is expected for the new command echelon. The Land, Navy and Air Force Commanders have changed.
General Yaşar Güler is cited as the Land Forces Commander.
Adnan Özbal is expected to be appointed to the Admiralty.
Hasan Küçükakyüz is cited as the Commander of Air Forces.
The appointments shall be submitted to President Erdoğan and announced after their approval.
Important messages from the Prime Minister
Prime Minister Yıldırım used the following expressions:
“During the recent past the number of youth taking to the mountain has decreased significantly.
Our foreign policy which increases our friends will continue.
The greatest threat at our southern borders is instability.”
10.00 Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım visited the Mausoleum with members of the Supreme Military Council (YAŞ).
11.00 Prime Minister Yıldırım chaired the YAŞ meeting at Çankaya Palace.
18.00 President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will host dinner for the members of the Supreme Military Council at the Presidential Complex.
6 hour surprise summit
A surprise summit took place before the meeting in which appointments and promotions would be discussed. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım convened at the Presidential Palace in Tarabya. The 6 hour meeting was attended by Minister for National Defense Nurettin Canikli and General Staff General Hulusi Akar. The subject of the meeting was related to YAŞ.
Discharge and promotions on the agenda
149 generals and admirals who had a role in the coup attempt before YAŞ last year have been discharged. Together with the number of commanders who were retired within the scope of YAŞ the number of generals and admirals who left the TSK (Turkish Armed Forces) reached 197. As a result a decision was made to promote more colonels and fill the vacant cadres for generals and admirals as much as possible. During every YAŞ, 50 colonels on average are promoted to the position of general and admiral while the number for last year was 99. In spite of his the total of generals and admirals in the Land, Navy and Air Forces receded from 326 to 196. The promotion of colonels within this framework is anticipated in today’s YAŞ.
A majority of those who were promoted to general and admiral in the 2013, 2014 and 2015 councils were discharged for participating in the coup attempt and FETÖ affiliations.
The new posts of the generals will be determined after the promotions. The Council decisions will be published in the Official Gazette after the approval of President Erdoğan.
YAŞ members visited the Mausoleum
Members of the Supreme Military Council visited the Mausoleum before the meeting. Prime Minister Yıldırım wrote the following in the Mausoleum private ledger::
“We are committed to working to bring the republic has solid foundations and which is your legacy to reach the goal of contemporary civilizations. Our main target is to have a more prosperous, safe, fair and free country. Our conviction in protecting the homeland territory which has been secured with the blood of martyrs with the same determination and resolution and entrusting it to future generations is stronger than ever.
The spirit of resurrection demonstrated by our nation against the attempted coup d’etat on July 15, 2016 proved once again that this nation will never give up its independence, its future, and will preserve the values that make us who we are at all costs just like yesterday. With the courage and heroic stance of July 15th, our nation has shown the whole world that it will never accept captivity and has prevented the dishonorable ones from over violating the homeland.
At the cost of blood and lives this nation has demonstrated that its will supersedes all forms of tutelage..
Our state has the power to eliminate all forms of threats. With this awareness, we wish that the Supreme Military Council Meeting, which we will carry out in line with the targets of 2023, will be beneficial to our country, to the nation and to the Turkish Armed Forces and extend our gratitude and mercy to our martyrs who bequethed us an independent state and our gratitude to our veterans.”
The meeting will be chaired by Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım and attended by General Staff General Hulusi Akar, Deputy Prime Ministers Bekir Bozdağ, Mehmet Şimşek, Fikri Işık, Recep Akdağ and Hakan Çavuşoğlu, Minister for Justice Abdülhamit Gül, Minister for Foreign Affairs Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, Minister for Interior Süleyman Soylu, Minister for National Defense Nurettin Canikli, Land Forces Commander General Salih Zeki Çolak, Naval Forces Commander Admiral Oramiral Bülent Bostanoğlu and Air Forces Commander General Abidin Ünal.
